I recently posed this riddle: Is Asimov dead, or is he a wine critic for the New York Times?

The answer? He is both.

Isaac Asimov, Russian-born professor of biochemistry, prolific author of science-fiction, died in 1992. He wrote close to five hundred books. The Best Three Seconds, Ever

I’ve recently been listening to nothing but Amy Winehouse on the morning drive to school. It’s changing my life, mostly in the hearing area. You can’t play “You Know I’m No Good” at a low volume. At the very least, the sound must be loud enough to vibrate the rear-view mirror.

That song, actually, has become a double hazard for me. At the end of the second verse, after she says “I cried for you on the kitchen floor,“ the drummer sets down the most sexy, concise fill in contemporary soul music. It lasts from 1:50-1:52. He kicks hard on the base and then claps down the high-hat, creating a hiss like when you drop the lid on a boiling pot. The beauty of the lick is in the maturity of his restraint. Most drummers would play something much showier. By bucking this convention, he reinforces the mournful tone of the chorus, serving the song, not himself.

Whenever I hear it I have to listen to it again, and again. I’ve become more concerned with the rewind button than the stop lights on Main Street. It would be ideal if my CD player began to skip on that drum fill, and I could listen to it forever.
